I discovered INXS in 1987, when I was 13 years old, and from the very first moment Michael’s voice stayed with me forever.
Before I even knew what he looked like, I was already fascinated by his voice and the music of INXS. Back then we didn’t have internet, so for a while INXS was simply a voice on the radio that completely captivated me. Then one day I saw Michael for the first time in a teen magazine, and suddenly that connection became even more real and unforgettable for me.
Beyond the beauty, the charisma and the “rock star” image, there was always something warm, sensitive and deeply human in his eyes.
Michael became part of some of the most important memories and emotions of my youth. His music was there during moments of happiness, dreams, nostalgia and difficult times, and somehow it stayed in my heart throughout the years.
When he passed away in 1997, it affected me far more deeply than I could explain. For many years I could not even listen to INXS anymore because it hurt too much. I packed away the posters, stopped watching interviews and changed the radio station whenever a song came on, because the sadness felt unbearable.
Almost thirty years later, I'm finally listening again. The sadness is still there, but so is the love, the admiration, the nostalgia, and the gratitude for everything his music made me feel then… and still makes me feel now.
Some people simply pass through our lives. Others leave part of themselves in our hearts forever.
Michael Hutchence is still deeply missed and deeply loved.
