I recently heard “Shine Like It Does” on the radio and was immediately thrown back in time about 13 years ago. I was a confused and ripe twleve years old and convinced, when I was old enough, that I would marry Michael Hutchence. Now at 25 I had forgotten those jumbled yet gloriuos feelings, until I heard the song on the radio. I remember, three years ago, hearing the news about Michael and feeling so removed from the situation. I didn't even believe it, really. I thought that it was impossible for him to be dead since we weren't married yet - my legacy had not yet come true! Then a feeling of guilt swept over me; I was just another one of his fans who wanted a piece of him. I couldn't imagine what it must feel like to have millions of people want a person all at once. These two memories - when I was 12 and back in 1997 - have brought back my passion for INXS. I went back home and dug thru my old closet for my copies of INXS tapes, long since forgotten. I have since been listening to them nonstop in the car on the way to work and back. Though instead of feeling sad, I roll down the windows and sing at the top of my lungs (I was never one to care about what others thought). Driving east down Interstate 30 with the sun coming up on a fresh morning I am reminded how much INXS had touched my life as an adolescent and I open my mouth and chime, “This time, will be the last time, that we will fight like this....” And I smile.
