It is nice to check in now and then. Funny how ritual becomes important when we lose loved ones.
This website is a fitting tribute to Michael. But I think it serves a much more simple purpose. It is kind of like the internet equivalent or dropping by to have a cup of tea. It is a way of reconnecting..of saying hat you truly cared about someone.
With the hectic pace of life it is so easy to be complacent. We forget to thank the wonderful people who touch our lives on a daily basis.
Michael was lucky. He had the gift of musicianship..a form of instant connection. He had the power to help people escape from the turmoil and troubles of life. He blessed us with his gift and for this we are thankful.
But with people like Michael we forget they are human. They seem so perfect to us. We fail to realize that celebrities lives are pretty much like our own. They have their ups and downs..but unlike us they have to deal with it publicly.
I thought of Michael recently having heard an anecdote about Madonna. She allegedly got in to an elevator with Rosie O Donnell. A teenager got in with them. He turned to Madonna and said “Your hair was much nicer before. You look ugly now.”
You see to him Madonna wasn't human. I am sure she has developed a thick skin but at the same time we seem to forgot our common humanity. People like Michael Hutchence and Madonna are just that..people.
They may be more talented, better looking and hell a lot richer than us but they have the same insecurities.
Of course a part of me goes mad when I hear a celebrity complaining about media attention. That is naturally part of the life. But nobody deserves the cruel treatment which Michael and Paula received in the British press.
So the next time you read a scathing story about a celebrity..put some perspective on it. Don't allow the media to distort your opinion of people. Oh and by the way I work as a reporter so I can't be accused of just being a tabloid hating crackpot!
So read your tabloids. Just don't believe everything. Respect someones privacy. Don't make quick judgements on people like Paula and Michael.
They are really just a reflection of us. Their joys are similar to ours..their tragedies could be our own. Never think of someone in cartoon terms especially someone like Michael. He deserved better.
