“Some silken moment
Goes on forever
And we’re leaving
Broken hearts behind”
… From ‘Mystify’
I think it is way overdue to take Michael’s lyrics at their face value and apply it to all our hearts. It has been 12 years today and many may still feel sorrow at the mention of his name. But we are all on notice; it is time to leave the broken hearts behind. Too many articles and conversations about Michael dwell on the struggles leading up to his untimely death, but the vast major of Michael’s time on this earth was at the opposite end of that spectrum. They were days of positive living, amazing achievements, infectious performances where he displayed fun, good times and exuberance.
Think about the silken moments of Michael’s time on this earth, and let those gracious, silken moments dominate your thoughts and hearts with a new joy and celebration. I think Michael would love you to feel hope and not despair, thankfulness and not sorrow. The silken moments of those amazing performances, from Macy’s, South Yarra to Madison Square Garden, New York; from the small crowd in the Royal Antler, Narrabeen Australia, to the hundreds of thousands in Rio, Brazil; from Hamburg, Germany to the Hammersmith Odeon, London; and from a theatre in Wisconsin to the stadium in Wembley. Hundreds of thousands of people, a thousand nights and every one of them charged with silken moments of amazing performances and uplifting songs.
Quite recently I said hello to Tiger at a friend of Michael’s concert in London. She is so radiant and bubbly and perhaps in her childlike innocence, is an example of how blessing can triumph over tragedy.
Her Dad’s words in Mystify seem appropriate for her today.
“In all that exists
Well, none has your beauty
I see your face
and I will survive…
Eternally wild with the power
To make every moment come alive
All those stars that shine upon you
Will kiss you every night”.
Celebrate Michael’s silken moments and search for your own silken moments in your day, and in all your days that by God’s grace will follow. And please don’t forget… from this moment we are leaving broken hearts behind.
Family, friends, fans, TV and radio stations around the world, celebrate Michael today… and play “Mystify”!
